Since I began regularly
attending Gellionnen, to my knowledge: window damage has occurred three
times (twice to the front windows, once to the back); heaters were stolen
(then returned! unfortunately they were unusuable and had to be replaced);
and a car crashed into the gates and wall. More recent occurrences
are the various 'pock-marks' in the front (outside) wall, including damage
to the blue sign; and, most recently, damage to the wood panelling on one
of the doors. It is even more unfortunate that this is probably only
a small amount of the vandalism that Gellionnen has seen.
It is not only Gellionnen Chapel that is subject to damage; the mountain itself is increasingly being used as a dumping ground for rubbish and for the burning of stolen cars. I would like to repeat some of Dr. Beverley Littlepage's words here (part of his article on 'Vandalism at Gellionnen' in the news archive): 'We would ask that anyone in the area might make a habit of looking at Gellionnen Chapel and reporting any suspicious happenings [to gellionnen@hotmail.com] or to the police. Your interest could help keep this historic building safe.' Jamie Nemeth |
