How to get to Gellionnen

updated 28/7/2007

28/7/2007:  The maps have been amended to show the location of the Pontardawe Festival site.

(Note: Somerfield store has closed.)

12/12/2004:  A new Tesco store has been built, which you will see as you approach Pontardawe from Swansea on the A4067 bypass.  The Pontardawe map below has an arrow pointing to 'Superstores' - this may now be misleading and infact refers to the Somerfield and Lidl stores.

While there are many ways to get to Gellionnen, via the network of roads that span the mountains, many of us travel to the chapel from Pontardawe.

However, there are also many ways to get to Pontardawe!  To find directions, please click on the links below, or alternatively scroll down the page until you find an appropriate route.

How to get to Gellionnen

From Pontardawe

From the M4 Motorway

From the A465 (Heads of the Valley road)

Anyone is welcome on Sunday mornings; before, during or after the service! (Gellionnen is open from about 10:45 am to about 12:30 pm; service 11 am - 12 pm approx. - the word 'ish' should be used generously!)

If you would like to visit at any other time, or if you would like more information/more precise directions, please feel free to email us (gellionnen@hotmail.com).  If you include in your e-mail when you intend to come and some contact details, we could arrange for someone to meet you in Pontardawe so that you could follow them up to the chapel.

How to get to Pontardawe from the M4 Motorway

Follow the M4.

Exit the motorway at Junction 45

(exit ramp signposted Pontardawe A4067).

The exit ramp leads to a roundabout.

Take the A4067 (N) to Pontardawe.

(16/4/2003)  Beware!! Junction 45 has recently been 'upgraded', i.e. made more complicated!  The roundabout is now much bigger than it used to be and incorporates lane changes.  When you come off the motorway, follow all signs/road markings for A4067(N).

The diagram below shows a section of Pontardawe.

As you approach Pontardawe on the bypass from Swansea (after having left Junction 45 of the M4), you will come to two roundabouts.

At the first roundabout, turn left. (You will see the Pontardawe Inn on your right-hand side)

At the second roundabout, go straight on. (This is a short section of single-carriageway road with a central reservation)

At the end of this road, you will reach another roundabout.

Turn right towards the BP Petrol Station, then a quick left onto the road signposted 'Mynydd Gellionnen' (which means Gellionnen Mountain).

How to get to Gellionnen from Pontardawe

Gellionnen should be easy to get to from here - however there are some junctions without signs, so just incase here are some directions for the mountain road.

Follow the route highlighted with GREEN ARROWS on the map.

The arrow furthest right is just after the signpost for Mynydd Gellionnen.

Continue on the Mynydd Gellionnen road.

Drive carefully, beware of bends and oncoming cars.

Take the left fork after the incline.

When you get to the top of the mountain, turn left at the junction.

At the triangle, turn right.

'So where's Gellionnen? I can't see it!'

Don't panic! If you look slightly to your left, in about 10 seconds' time you should see the roof of Gellionnen appear over the hilltop, then you will see a left turning which is the track leading to Gellionnen. If it is a fine day you are also greeted by a spectacular view of Swansea and Mumbles Head, and the surrounding mountains.
